At Samurai Teppanyaki, we believe a restaurant isn't just about food; it's a backdrop for life's most precious memories. Recently, we had the incredible honor of celebrating a very special customer's 17th birthday—a milestone that brought our journey in Adelaide full circle.
Looking around our restaurant today, it is hard to believe that Samurai has been around for 14 years in Adelaide. We have had the privilege of serving the people of Adelaide and our amazing community for over a decade, but moments like this recent celebration truly remind us why we do what we do.
Watching Time Pass Through Familiar Faces
Running a restaurant for 14 years means witnessing countless stories unfold. We have seen children grow up, families expand, and friendships deepen within these walls. The boy who came in for his birthday is just one example of the many guests who have become part of our extended family.
It’s touching to see how a simple meal can become a tradition. Over the years, we’ve watched children grow into adults, couples get married, and now bring their own children to Samurai Teppanyaki. This continuity is a reminder that our restaurant is more than a place to eat — it’s a place where memories are made and cherished.
The 'Then'
Our birthday boy first visited us when he was just a little five-year-old boy, 12 years ago. Even then, he knew how to light up a room. We recently looked back at the photos from that visit.

This heart-melting photograph from 12 years ago captures the pure, wide-eyed joy of that five-year-old boy in his blue t-shirt featuring a banana graphic. His dad is smiling broadly behind him, wearing sunglasses and triumphantly holding up a silver spoon in anticipation of dessert. You can just see the plate of ice cream waiting for them in the foreground.
The 'Now'
Flash forward 12 years, and that little boy has truly grown up into a "big boy" ready to conquer the world. To celebrate turning 17, he came back to where it all began, and he had one very specific request. He wanted the exact same dessert.
He asked for the Flambé Banana. This used to be our signature dessert back in the old days, but over time, we moved it off the main menu. Today, it is our special secret dessert—a true hidden treasure that only our oldest and most loyal customers know about. Of course, we were more than happy to bring this secret legacy dish back to the table to celebrate his big day.

And here is how that request looked! The 17-year-old birthday boy is now wearing a black t-shirt and smiling proudly, alongside his dad who, bearded and showing his tattoo, is perfectly recreating the iconic spoon-holding pose. The Flambé Banana, complete with a classic pink paper umbrella, is waiting for them on the traditional wooden table, set against the warm backdrop of Japanese shoji-style screens.
A Spectacular Memory, Ignited
There is nothing quite like the theatre of the Flambé Banana. While you can see the excitement of the moment in their smiles above, we wanted to give you a close-up look at what makes this secret dish so special. It’s not just about the flavor; it is about the experience.

This detailed food portrait showcases the active theatricality of this special request. Our signature textured green bowl holds the Flambé Banana—the caramel-coated whole slices are dramatically catching on fire, creating vibrant orange and blue flames that dance over the melting vanilla ice cream and chocolate drizzle. A chocolate-striped wafer and the matching pink cocktail umbrella complete this beautiful, flaming portrait.
We invite you to experience the flambé action yourself—watch our chef bring the heat to the teppan grill in this dedicated video showcasing the Flambé Banana:[Video Link]
Our Greatest Honor: 14 Years in Adelaide
Watching this young man grow from that five-year-old boy into the fine 17-year-old adult we served today is an profound reminder of time's quiet passage. Our walls at Samurai have seen so many young kids grow up right before our eyes, eventually becoming adults themselves. Some of those kids have even grown up, married, and started bringing their own young children to Samurai to introduce them to the magic.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to this incredible father and son for letting us be a part of their story for 12 years. It is our greatest honor to be the owners of Samurai Teppanyaki, serving the beautiful Adelaide community and being the backdrop for generations of your family's memories.
Happy 17th Birthday! We can’t wait to see you—and your spoon—back next time!
